What is an Air Filter and what does it do?

The air filter is a device which contains a fine filter paper inside with many holes. Often it is located in a black plastic container near the engine and the holes are for the air to go to the engine. The air filter is designed to capture all the dirt and dust while allowing the clean air to reach the engine then it is combusted with the fuel before it exits through the exhaust system.
