SONY PLAYSTATION NETWORK RETURNS EVERYWHERE EXCEPT JAPAN
Sony has put its PlayStation Network back online almost a month after the service was suspended following an attack by hackers.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
17/05/2011
Sony began rolling out the updated PlayStation Network (PSN) over the weekend but the restoration of service was staggered so that the service was not overwhelmed.
The service is now live everywhere in the world except Japan, where legislators have refused to allow the service back online until they have further information about the security measures Sony has put in place.
Users who want to access the PSN must first download a software update and then reset their password. They will then be able to access online gaming as well as selected services, including video rental, Sony’s Qriocity music service and third-party streaming services. The PlayStation Store remains closed.
Sony briefly suspended the service earlier today because of the volume of password reset requests. The company has told users that password reset emails could take time to reach them because of the number of emails being sent.
Sony suspended the PSN on April 20, after discovering that hackers had broken into the system and stolen user data including email addresses, passwords, date of birth and other personal information. Sony says it has not found evidence that credit card information was stolen.
“I can’t thank you enough for your patience and support during this time,†said Kazuo Hirai, Sony’s executive deputy president, in a statement yesterday.
He added: “We know even the most loyal customers have been frustrated by this process and are anxious to use their Sony products and services again.â€
Users returning to the service will be offered free identity theft protection, a month of free membership to Sony’s premium PlayStation Plus service and free content including two free PlayStation 3 games.
