As per the World Health Organization (WHO), Kerosene lanterns significantly contribute to household air pollution (HAP). In developing countries, the amount of HAP is high as compared to rural parts. There’s no denying there are other sources for indoor pollution as well. Therefore, WHO has rolled out guidelines for the betterment of air quality.

With that being said WHO strongly discourages the use of excessive kerosene as a fuel for lighting, heating, and cooking. It has also been recognized, kerosene lamps are the major source of BC (black carbon) emissions, especially in the developing country. A study in 2012 found out that the burning of kerosene results in the emission of pure BC, which also contributes in regional positive climate forcing. As noted by head of the climate and clean air coalition secretariat, kerosene lamps are exceedingly essential targets to eliminate the HAP as well as short-lived climate pollutant emissions.

The professor at Duke University of climate science, Drew Shindell have also mentioned, other than kerosene, there’s hardly a major BC source combination, which comes with readily available alternative, and climate forcing effects.

Another reason why its concerning, using kerosene lamps indoor produces an enormous amount of heat, which raises up the risk of it igniting combustible materials like wood, fabric, wallboard, etc. The chances are even higher if these objects are placed too close to the lantern. Lanterns are designed the way to let the gas pass through vents located at the top and bottom of the structure. Thus, it’s one of the reasons why people opt for the copper outdoor light fixture. Outside the gate, it’s safer, elegant, which enhances the ambience.

Furthermore, the gas lamps expel carbon monoxide, which is known to be fatal. Carbon monoxide can lead to severe life-threatening issues when absorbed in the blood, and this adds to another reason why kerosene or gas lamps are not safe indoors.
