Park Avenue dentist Dr. Deborah Pilla makes dental care more pleasant for children, with sedation dentistry treatments
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | 19/12/2013 |
New York, NY ( connect2business.co.uk ) December 18, 2013 - Many young children are apprehensive about visiting the dentist, and even more anxious about undergoing procedures, such as fillings, root canals or tooth extractions. Fortunately, sedation dentistry treatments at can help quell the fears of even the most anxious child.
Dr. Deborah Pilla, of Park View Pediatric Dentistry in New York City, explains that sedation dentistry is extremely common among young children who have previously been unable to receive dental care due to high levels of anxiety, or for those children who have special care needs. Prior to administering any sedative or anesthetic, Dr. Pilla discusses the specific needs of each young child with a parent, discussing the process with them in great detail.
Dr. Pilla offers three types of sedation at her practice, designed to treat patients in comfort. The first type offered is called oral conscious sedation, which comes in the form of a small pill. The patient takes the pill approximately one hour before the procedure begins. The pill will help the patient relax, and leave them with little or no memory of the procedure.
A second sedation treatment Dr. Pilla offers is nitrous oxide, also called "laughing gas." Nitrous oxide is administered at the dentist's office just before dental treatment begins. The effects of nitrous oxide are immediate, and allow a patient to feel calm or even giddy, during treatment. The effects of nitrous oxide will wear off naturally, without any lasting feelings of disorientation, or dizziness. Nitrous oxide is also safe to use on patients, regardless of any allergies, or existing health issues.
Dr. Pilla also offers a third form of sedation dentistry within her practice, General Anesthesia (or "IV sedation.") This form of sedation is used less frequently than nitrous oxide or oral sedation. The technique uses anesthesia for children getting dental treatments in a hospital setting. Dr. Pilla conducts this treatment at North Shore LIJ/Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. IV sedation is usually recommended for patients who either need extensive dental work, or have severe anxieties. The treatment allows the child to go to sleep, so the dentist can work without any distractions.
The advantages of sedation dentistry are reaped not only by patients, but by pediatric dentists as well. Aside from treating anxious patients, sedation dentistry can be used for children who have tooth sensitivities or difficulty sitting for long periods of time.
Dr. Pilla offers sedation dentistry, along with other dental treatments, at her practice, Park View Pediatric Dentistry in New York City. Interested parties are encouraged to contact her office directly at 212.879.6518 or http://www.parkavepd.com.
