PRINCETON NEUROLOGICAL SURGERY OFFERS SAFE, NON-SURGICAL DIAGNOSIS FOR BACK PAIN

Renowned Neurosurgeon Dr. John Lipani offers discography to determine if patients are experiencing back pain as a result of abnormal spine conditions

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hamilton, NJ ( connect2business.co.uk ) September 22, 2013 - While it is normal for people to experience occasional lower back pains, sometimes these pains can become chronic and incapacitating. Lower back pains are usually caused by ruptured discs, which occur as a result of spinal injury, or wear and tear on the lower back. These discs cause pain in the back, as they press on the nearby nerves.

Dr. John Lipani, Neurosurgeon-In-Chief of Princeton Neurological Surgery, performs a diagnostic test, known as a "discography," to determine if patients are experiencing lower back pains as a result of spinal abnormalities. Also known as a discogram, this test is used only for patients who are experiencing constant lower back pains or numbness.

During a discopgraphy, a needle is inserted through the skin and comes to rest on the outer layer of the targeted discs. Imaging technology is used to help Dr. Lipani see the injection sites. A contrast dye liquid is injected into the center of each disc, and will spread through any tears in an abnormal disc.

As Dr. Lipani injects each disc, he often asks his patients to pinpoint the location of their current pain, as well as to rate the intensity of pain they feel. This will help to identify the areas which need to be treated. Following the exam, the results are sent to a radiologist for review. Dr. Lipani will discuss the final results with his patients, and together, they will develop an effective treatment plan to resolve the back pain. A discography is done in a doctor's office in as little as 30 minutes. The procedure also requires no downtime, and no anesthesia.

Because discographies are highly-invasive, they are only used when other tests have failed to identify a source of pain. Despite its invasive nature, Dr. Lipani explains to his patients that this may be the best way to accurately determine which damaged discs are causing the pain. The test can also be very effective in determining what treatment is best for the patient.

If you are experiencing severe lower back pains that have not responded well to other tests or treatments, a discography may be the right procedure for you.
