Director of Music (0.6 - 0.8 FTE)

Brighton College Prep School is seeking to appoint a Director of Music to start in August 2025.

This role has responsibility and oversight for the planning and delivery of Music to pupils in Years 4 to 6. The successful candidate should be passionate about the education and welfare of pupils and possess an innovative and dynamic approach. They will be supportive of the school and its over-arching aims and be committed to a continuous improvement of our provision.

This is a part-time role, working three or four full days per week, to include Tuesday and Wednesday.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • To line manage the Head of Music (Nursery to Year 3).
  • To develop and lead a creative and inspirational Music programme and organise its delivery, including updating Schemes of Work as required and contributing to the whole school development plan.
  • To be responsible for monitoring the performance and functioning of the department.
  • To attend HOD and curriculum meetings as required.
  • To liaise with and attend meetings with the Nursery to Year 3 Head of Music, College Head of Department and Family of Schools leads.
  • To manage the Music Department budget.
  • To attend inset courses and maintain an up-to-date awareness of subject developments.
  • To identify and work with potential music scholars.
  • To oversee visiting music teachers, including recruitment, timetables (in liaison with the co-curricular administrator), demonstrations and finances (in liaison with the College music administrator).
  • To communicate with parents over choice and suitability of instruments and queries relating to music lessons.
  • To accompany pupils in music exams, and work with the College to organise exam visits.
  • To oversee loans of school instruments.
  • To seek opportunities to develop and promote music within the school and wider community, for example entering music competitions and arranging visits for choral groups.
  • To regularly input on the Prep Hub.
  • To plan and deliver the Music Challenge week activities.
  • To prepare music groups for two major concerts (Christmas and Summer), a leavers’ recital and three teatime recitals (one per term).
  • To co-direct the Year 6 production with the Head of Drama, and support with the production of the Year 4 and 5 shows.
  • To prepare music for the Harvest, Remembrance and Christmas Carol services.
  • To provide musical items for Open Mornings and Speech Day.
  • To prepare music for assemblies and chapel services.
  • To support admissions events as required.
  • To organise the yearly House Music competition and a winners’ recital.
  • To co-ordinate co-curricular music activities. Providing weekly rehearsals for choirs, orchestras and wind band. Overseeing the running of ensembles taken by VMTS.
  • To have expertise in both choral and instrumental direction, and be a proficient pianist.
  • To run Grade 5 theory lessons, and aural session for examinations.
  • To promote ensembles and choirs to ensure gender equality and balance.
  • To support Scholarship preparation at 11+ entry for the College.

Safeguarding Responsibilities:

  • This role will involve daily contact with pupils and the successful candidate will be engaging in regulated activity relevant to children.
