Communication Support Worker

At Chichester College Group we have an exciting opportunity for you to join us as a Communication Support Worker at our Brighton MET College. You will join us on a variable hours basisand in return, we will offer a competitive salary of £15.90 - £17.38 per hour.

The Communication Support Worker role:

As our Communication Support Workeryou will work with D/deaf students to facilitate communication in a College environment, including working with learners in practical and theory classes, tutorials, interviews, meetings and assessments.

This work usually involves working with only one learner for each session. You will be working with an established team of CSWs and will have a caseload of learners.

Key Responsibilities of ourCommunication Support Worker:

  • Working in-class with identified learners to support their communication. The communication may be between learner and lecturer or peers. It may involve communication of formal lectures and discussions or to involve the D/deaf learner in all aspects of the classroom experience.
  • Offering support appropriate to each learner e.g. SSE, BSL, lip-speaking.
  • Supporting learners in a variety of environments e.g. interviews, meetings, study sessions and assessments.
  • Modifying teaching and learning materials when necessary.
  • Submitting record sheets for all sessions within agreed deadlines (usually within two days) and to an appropriate standard.
  • Maintaining appropriate files and records for the auditable documents of the department.
  • Establishing relationships with the other CSWs and the SEND and Additional Learning Support team.
  • Maintaining best practice and share this with colleagues.
  • Monitoring learner interaction and progress in the college setting and work with colleagues to ensure that referrals are made to appropriate college services.
  • Liaising with lecturers in the planning of how the Communication Support Worker will work with learners.

Our ideal Communication Support Worker should have the below skills and experience:

  • Education to GCSE standard grade C/4 (or equivalent) in English and maths
  • Minimum NVQ 3 British Sign Language
  • Experience of communicating for a D/deaf person in a formal situation
  • Significant experience delivering dyslexia support to learners
  • Knowledge of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults and Prevent
  • Ability to work in a confidential manner
