Chef Care Home
Hours: This is a multi-site position: 15 hours based in Garden House, 15 hours based in John Wills House. Total of 30 hours per week to include weekend working.
Hourly rate: £13.44 per hour plus weekend enhancement where applicable
Job Purpose
The Chef (Care Home) manages the day-to-day food and drinks provision in their allocated care home by overseeing a kitchen and team of Senior Hospitality Assistants, with the majority of food prepared by our suppliers.
Key Results
Summary responsibilities/outcomes
- Responsible for the day-to-day provision of food and drinks service across allocated care home, tailored to meet the needs and preferences of our residents. Cooking of light meals and finishing/serving food prepared by our suppliers.
- Works closely with the Care Home General Manager, to ensure quality, planning and timings, consistency, and compliance in relation to modified diets and care/nutrition needs.
- Greater engagement of residents with food. Offering more choice and flexible timings, using presentation and aromas to entice residents. Cooking bespoke food options including breakfasts, light meals and for parties or events. Discuss food preferences (working with supplier to source these) and with the Activities Coordinator, encourages resident participation in activities such as cake decorating, food demonstrations etc.
- Works closely with the Resident Support Team Leads to support and coach the Resident Support Assistants to ensure food is delivered/presented to standard.
- Responsible for day-to-day temperature checks/controls regarding quality and presentation, labelling food, allergens etc.
- Responsible for planning, stock rotation and ordering using Trust/supplier systems. Day-to-day food waste disposal, and general catering/kitchen hygiene and cleanliness.
- Accountable for day-to-day operations in relation to the food and labour budget.
- Completes internal audits and activities using the Trusts systems in relation to health and safety, HACCP and COSHH. Manages external visits from EHO, CQC etc.
- Line manages the Senior Hospitality Assistants; people activities including recruitment, managing absence and performance and associated activities. This will include supervisions and rotas and objective setting on the Trusts people system.
Other Skills and Qualifications
Essential
- Diploma Level 2 in Food Production/Catering (or equivalent)
- Experience of supervising others
- Experience and knowledge of special dietary requirements/modified diets, advising on nutrition, hydration and dietary needs
- Working within a busy and fast paced kitchen environment
- Experience working in a care home catering function
- Experience of stock ordering and management
- Experience of monitoring/working within a budget
- Knowledge of food hygiene and health and safety legislation and best practice
- Good standard of IT skills including Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook
Desirable
- Level 3 Award in Managing Food Safety in Catering (or equivalent)
- Diploma Level 3 in Food Production/Catering (or equivalent)
- Working with older people or people living with disabilities, communication or memory difficulties
- Ability to communicate and present information to audiences with varied abilities clearly and with confidence
- Experience working with food produced externally
The role
As a Chef, you'll be ensuring residents' quality of life and well-being by running a catering service that is visible and approachable for all residents, relatives and colleagues. Moreover, the role includes pricing and planning menus, preparing food and managing supplies. You'll contribute to providing individualised care through a nutritious diet, meeting the necessities of residents.
Training and development
If you wish to proceed, you will practice Health and Safety, Food Handling and Hygiene techniques. Training and induction are also provided.
