Dr. Elbert St. Claire encourages people to seek treatment and information for the bone-loss condition, osteoporosis
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | 02/10/2013 |
New York, NY ( connect2business.co.uk ) October 1, 2013 - As we age, our bones inevitably become thinner. Since bone is a living tissue, it is constantly being absorbed and replaced by newer bone. However, when the creation of new bone no longer keeps up with the breaking down of older bone, the condition that occurs is known as "osteoporosis." While lost bone cannot be replaced, Dr. Elbert St. Claire offers his people effective treatment for this condition.
Dr. St. Claire, of New York's St. Claire Medical, explains that osteoporosis affects millions of men and women, usually those over the age of 65. Osteoporosis is considered a "silent" condition, since it is often not found until a bone fractures.
Once bones are weakened by osteoporosis or by a fall, symptoms including severe back pains, loss of height, and poor posture may occur. Patients with a family history of osteoporosis are at increased risk for this condition, as are female patients who went through early menopause.
Dr. St. Claire diagnoses osteoporosis by starting with a complete medical exam. He evaluates a patient's personal and family medical history, conducts a physical examination, and tests, including X-rays, and bone densitometry, which are used to determine the density and mass of bones. If the density of a bone is low, a fracture is possible. Following diagnosis, he thoroughly evaluates each case to come up with the most effective treatment plan. Some treatment plans may include dietary changes, exercise plans, or medications to prevent further bone loss.
When it comes to living with osteoporosis, Dr. St. Claire stresses the importance of caution. For a patient living with osteoporosis, even the slightest fall can be dangerous, since thinner bones are more vulnerable to breaks and fractures. He adds that it is important for patients to maintain a healthy diet, and to obtain calcium and vitamin D, which are helpful in build stronger bones. Calcium and Vitamin D can be obtained in many foods and diet supplements. Patients are also advised not to smoke, since smoking often increases the rate of bone loss.
Dr. St. Claire works closely with each of his patients to develop a comprehensive treatment plan, which enable them to live healthier lives, with as little pain or discomfort as possible. He encourages patients to speak with their doctor if they believe they have osteoporosis, or may be at risk for it in the future.
St. Claire Medical is open Monday through Friday: 9:30AM to 5:30PM, Saturday: 9:30AM to 12:00PM and additional hours by request. Interested parties are encouraged to make an appointment at (212) 932-7538.
