Lanes school of driving was established in 1914 by mr fred lane and has been under the present ownership of mr keith paine since 1976. our core business is that of teaching people to drive up to the current driving test standard. we are currently celebrating our 100th year in business – a wonderful achievement for any company and one which we are extremely proud of!

Automatic Driving Lessons
When you are learning to drive for the first time, you will have the option of either learning in a manual car or an automatic car. You may have heard that automatic cars are easier to drive. On the other hand you may have heard that manual cars give you greater control. At Lanes we will give you the option of learning either in a manual or an automatic.
Automatic cars are easier to drive. With manual cars, you will have to physically change the gears and control the clutch pedal. This is a big challenge if you have not driven before. Bad clutch control will lead to frequent stalling of the car which is a common problem for beginners.
With automatic cars all you will have to worry about is steering the car and going faster or slowing down. There is no clutch and all the gear changing is being done for you. If you are not confident about your driving abilities or just want to learn as quickly and efficiently as possible, automatic cars could be the right choice for you.
Instructor Training
Our job is to develop your knowledge, correct any bad habits and then teach you the skills you will need to train others. If you think about it, you already know how to drive, you know most of the signs and road procedures, and although it would not be to the standard we require of a professional driving instructor, you could probably teach someone to drive at present.
Theory Training
The Theory Test is an important pre-requisite to the driving test and is the first step in obtaining your driving license. You need to know and understand what being a driver involves. This means having an understanding of the law and rules of the road, and being aware of the consequences when things go wrong. Understanding driving theory and applying the knowledge to your everyday driving will help you become a safe driver for life.
At Lanes we like to help you as much as we can with the Theory Test. It is best to start studying straight away as there is a lot to learn. Your instructor will answer any questions you have on driving theory during your practical lessons and will keep a close eye on your progress!
Lanes Gold
At Lanes we believe that learning to drive should be a pleasurable experience. To this end, we created “Lanes Goldâ€, our premium service for discerning pupils. With Lanes Gold, you can take your lessons in a Vauxhall Corsa SXi. Lanes Gold prices are the same as ordinary Lanes prices. Automatics are charged at £1 extra per lesson.
Lanes Gold is part of Lanes School of Driving. Lanes School of Driving was established in 1914 by Mr Fred Lane. In 1976, it was taken over by Mr Keith Paine who continues to run the company today. Lanes have been teaching the public to drive for over 100 years. We have a breadth and depth of experience that few schools can match.

Lady Lanes
Are you a female looking for lessons? At Lanes we have many female pupils who want to learn to drive. So much so that we founded “Lady Lanesâ€. Lady Lanes is a subdivision of our company which is focused on teaching female pupils to drive using lady driving instructors.
Learning to drive is an empowering experience, but it is quite natural to feel anxious when you step into the driver’s seat for the first time. This anxiety can be doubled if you are a female. The driving instruction industry is very male oriented and most driving instructors are still male. Many of our female pupils have expressed concern about having to share a car with a male instructor. There is a perception that male instructors can be too harsh and demanding on pupils, especially if they are female.
