Stony Brook, NY ( connect2business.co.uk ) December 23, 2013 - For millions of people, adiposis edematosa, (more commonly known as "cellulite"), is an embarrassing, yet common, issue. Cellulite is when underlying fat deposits appear on the skin, creating a lumpy, dimpled, unflattering appearance on skin. Cellulite is especially noticeable on areas such as the buttocks, hips, and thighs.
Long Island plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Epstein, of Epstein Plastic Surgery in Stony Brook, says that several factors contribute to the appearance of cellulite, including diet, hormones, or genetics. He also adds that, while many people seek nonsurgical treatments, such as creams, and heat or massage therapy, a surgical procedure is more effective. "Nonsurgical methods will only treat cellulite on the surface of the skin," Dr. Epstein explains, "Many patients do not even realize that cellulite starts beneath the skin, not at the skin's surface."
Dr. Epstein continues, "Cellulite is common in areas of fat deposits on the body, and is the result of the unevenness of fatty tissues beneath the surface of the skin. When these fat cells accumulate, they push up against the skin, creating the appearance of dimpling on skin. Although it can often be unsightly, cellulite is not a serious condition, and it can appear on almost anyone, regardless of their body type. VASER Smooth is a surgical procedure which can fix this issue."
VASER Smooth is an attachment produced by Sound Surgical for their VASER ultrasound liposuction equipment. Dr. Epstein says VASER Smooth is extremely efficient for the removal of cellulite. However, he notes "This is still very new technology, and there are only a few others surgeons who are equipped to perform the procedure."
According to Dr. Epstein, VASER Smooth uses a thin, ultrasonic wand, which is inserted under the skin, breaking up superficial fat, as well as breaking up fibrous bands in the body, which pill on the underside of the skin, causing cellulite to appear.
"The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and requires or stitches or scars. Only tiny incisions will be made by the VASER Smooth tool. Loose skin is also tightened with the procedure," Dr. Epstein says.
Dr. Epstein adds that VASER Smooth treats cellulite effectively, with dramatic, permanent results and a quick recovery period. "Following treatment, a bandage will be placed to cover the incisions, and the patient can return home," he says, "Most patients will be able to return to work within a day or two. I will usually advise my patients to hold off on resuming any strenuous exercise for about two weeks. Following this procedure, patients will look and feel more confident in their own skin."
